Industrial-chic shipping containers

Exploring Shipping Container “Industrial-Chic” Décor

If you’ve never heard the term “industrial-chic,” then you may be surprised at everything that falls under this stylistic umbrella-term. It’s used to describe any repurposed industry-centered item or location and industry-reminiscent aesthetics that revolve around raw materials. These can all include:

  • Weathered wood
  • Building systems
  • Exposed brick
  • Industrial lighting fixtures
  • Concrete
  • Old factories
  • Other industrial spaces
  • Industrial-use items

What we like to focus on, however, is shipping container chic. You might have read our last blog, “5 Amazing Storage Container Projects,” and those projects can actually all be considered “industrial-chic,” despite how different they look! The term is so broad, and yet very distinctive, which is a large reason why some companies choose it – to be distinguished.

“Industrial chic” isn’t supposed to look perfectly finished – that’s one of the details that makes it attractive! Shipping containers are about as raw as you can get – the color varies, it might have a few dents in it because it really was used for an industry at some point, and it’s really just a big, metal box.

Here are some examples of places that really lean into the “industrial-chic” style with shipping containers – one of them right here in Louisville!

Let’s See Some Industrial Chic

1. Copper and Kings: Louisville, KY

After their grand opening in October of 2014, Copper and Kings Distillery made itself out to be a staple in Kentucky’s rich history in the distilling business. By offering their guests opportunities for mixology classes, rooftop-bar experiences, and tours of their on-site brandy distillery, where they deviate from Louisville’s bourbon-centered focus, Copper and Kings brings an interactive flare to the restaurant and bar business.

Apart from what they offer in terms of services, Copper and Kings built itself an industry chic-centered aesthetic, featuring stacked shipping containers at the entrance, as restrooms on the grounds, a gift shop, and an informational center, as well. Check out Copper and Kings’ industry chic theme at:

📍1121 E Washington St, Louisville, KY 40206

2. SteelCraft: Long Beach, CA

Preferring the term “urban-chic,” this outdoor community space has long since grown from it’s original first location. Striving to be more than just a place to hang out and eat, the organization makes every effort to be a part of the community through, “outreach, live music, and community events.” They now have three locations, offering vendors of the likes of:

  • Hangry Belly
  • Smog City Brewing
  • La Taquiera Brand
  • Modern Filipino Kitchen by Aysee
  • Off Duty Wine Bar
  • Dark Horse Coffee Roasters
  • Duck Donuts

Their spaces are made completely of repurposed shipping containers, each taken from the shipping industry and designed for a new life as a community vendor. As another facet of the industrial-chic style, ‘urban-industrial chic’ certainly ranks high on our lists! Find the urban-industrial chic SteelCraft at any of their three locations:

📍3768 Long Beach Blvd. Long Beach, CA 90807

📍16500 Bellflower Blvd., Bellflower, CA 90706

📍12900 Euclid St., Garden Grove, CA 92840

3. Crackheads and Choice Juicery: Carlsbad, CA

Are you craving breakfast and some juice? How about some served out of a couple of repurposed shipping containers? Find your balance in Carlsbad Village with Crackheads Breakfast and Choice Juicery, two restaurants you get in addition to that distinctive urban-industrial chic aesthetic with just a taste of the raw charm of the shipping container. As part of an outdoor food-hall, this is one industrial chic design that fits right into the setting. Find these amazing vendors at:

📍430 Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad, CA 92008

4. Red Fish Blue Fish: Pensacola, FL

With the same bouncy, festive feeling you get reading Dr. Seuss’ rhymes, Red Fish Blue Fish captures that industrial-chic feeling with reclaimed wood from an old Coca-Cola warehouse and their main operations functioning out of a multi-shipping container building. With a focus on sustainability, Red Fish Blue Fish perfectly encapsulates one of the best parts of the industrial-chic aesthetic – the reuse of already existing materials. Since the industrial trend started with vast, abandoned factory spaces that served as a natural aesthetic in itself. Find this sustainably-made industrial chic restaurant at:

📍5 Via De Luna Dr. B, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561

5. Odette Estate: Napa Valley, CA

Circling back around to California, the Odette Estate’s slogan, “Effortlessly Elegant, Deliberately Bold” is a great way to describe their particular brand of industrial-chic. Using repurposed shipping containers to function as the winemaker’s office, lab, employee break room, and employee restrooms, Odette went a step further and, like Red Fish Blue Fish, drew from the sustainable aspect of industrial-chic with natural-light high and exposed ceilings, recycled plywood flooring, and LED light fixtures.

They certainly go to show that shipping containers can fit in anywhere – we’ve seen them now on beaches, in cities, in the middle of a winery, where doesn’t it fit? Check out this elegantly-styled industrial design at:

📍5998 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558

6. Detroit Shipping Company: Detroit, MI

As a doggedly determined start-up composed of 21 shipping containers that would house the future Detroit Shipping Company, this is another urban-industrial chic hub for food, drink, and good times. Not to mention that in the heart of a car-industry city, industrial-chic isn’t hard to come by.

Containing lots of Michigan favorites and staying pretty local to cater to Detroit residents, the shipping-container compound hold live music, comedy, and other shows in an area that gets a bad rap, proving that industrial-chic doesn’t have to follow the status quo. Find this entertainment hub at:

📍474 Peterboro St, Detroit, MI 48201

7. The Eddy: Reno, NV

As a highlight if the social scene in Reno, The Eddy presents an intriguing mixture of a more modern, urban feel and that classic industrial-chic. Some of it’s biggest selling features include a myriad of local brews and and cocktails made out o the repurposed shipping containers that make up the property and the interactive space that fills in all the cracks. From giant Jenga and darts to interactive Burning Man sculptures and pop-up shops, the family and pet-friendly Eddy is sure to have something for everyone. But what else can you expect from a business that operates out of something as versatile as a shipping container? Find this hotspot at:

Used and new storage containers for sale or rent

Choosing a Storage Container: Which One Is For Me?

All storage situation have different storage needs – Moon knows that. In fact, that’s exactly why there’s an option for 20 foot standard, 40 foot standard, 20 foot Hi Cube, and 40 foot Hi Cube storage containers available.

All of our storage containers boast:

  • A highly-monitored structure to maintain integrity and safety
  • Double swing doors at both ends of the container
  • Short or long term rental
  • Location accessibility evaluation
  • Secure lock boxes
  • ISO-Standards for cleanliness, dryness, and security

But which one would be better for your storage needs?

Here’s a few things to consider when making your decision on storage container size.

Use

While it may be one of the more obvious considerations, it’s still a very important one. What will it be used for? Is it workshop storage? Commercial storage? Parts, pieces, delicates, size – it all contributes to the ultimate decision.

If it’s commercial use that the storage container will be used for, ask yourself if the contents will grow. Spare parts and pieces always seem to have a way of multiplying, and if your business if one that finds yourself with an excess of materials that need to be put somewhere, consider opting for a 40 foot container for future materials.

If your storage container will be put towards personal or residential use – for short term storage of items while you deep clean in preparation for a move, or for long term use of seasonal items, make sure you correctly measure how much material you have. Our dimensions allow for plenty of space for most items, but some pieces of furniture may require disassembly if they’re to be put with other big items or bulk boxes.

We also offer a refrigerated option for both 20 and 40 foot containers, with the only difference that the 20 foot is a standard container and the 40 foot is a Hi Cube container. Be sure to take into account that these units offer approximately 2 feet less than the space you would get with an regular container – 17′ 11″ for the 20 foot container and 37′ 11″ for the 40 foot containers – in order to take into consideration the space necessary for the refrigeration equipment.

Dimensions

To avoid any stress about sizes and space, our storage containers have a comprehensive list of dimensions, as listed below.

Dimensions of 20 or 40 foot storage containers

Standard or Hi Cube?

Besides just a 20 and 40 foot size option, Moon also offers the Hi Cube option for both lengths. These containers add an additional foot of height to your storage solution, making any tight spaces just a little easier to breathe in.

Standard containers come in approximate weights of 8,000 lbs. with a 2,694 cubic foot storage capacity for the 40 foot, and 5,000 lbs. with a 1,665 cubic foot capacity for the 20 foot storage container.

This may be changed by negligible amounts from standard to Hi Cube storage containers, but depending on your need, one foot may make all the difference, especially if your contents are fragile and you want some wiggle room.

Space Availability

Speaking of wiggle room, another factor you’ll have to consider is the space you have available for a storage container. These can be delivered and placed on ground level or on a chassis for dock-level access – again, it’s all very dependent on the application your storage container will be serving.

Moon offers a delivery location accessibility evaluation, so that you don’t have to worry, but if you’re in the initial stages of decision-making, our delivery methods for 20 foot storage containers are via a 35 foot flatbed roll-back truck, and our 40 foot storage containers are via a semi-truck with a 40 foot tilt-bed trailer.

Be sure to assure plenty of space for delivery, and call 502-776-2199 for a delivery location accessibility evaluation!

Trailer Leasing in Middletown, Kentucky

Did you know that Middletown is one of the earliest settlements in Kentucky? Founded in 1797, this home rule-class city features a winning combination of historical charm and commercial development.

Residents of Middletown can enjoy annual events, such as Concert in the Park, a Lenten fish fry, Veteran’s Day parade, and more. Those looking for event space can find ample enjoyment in Middletown’s Community Center, which occupies the site of the historic Middletown Methodist church. Its sanctuary features stained glass windows, pews, and a piano.

The History of Middletown, Kentucky

The name “Middletown” has a contentious backstory. Some historians believe that it was given this name due to its centrality between Louisville and Shelbyville, two larger cities. However, others think that “Middletown” can be credited to being between Westport and “Shippingport,” two early Ohio river port towns.

Originally a tract of land owned by Revolutionary War veteran Jacob Myers, Middletown’s central location made it quickly become an early trading post for farmers and travelers. It featured a tannery, cigar factory, millinery shop, general stores, a tailor, blacksmith, and more. Its location on a road between Lexington and Louisville made it a popular rest-stop for stage coaches and people on horseback. Early visitors could stay at pleasant amenities like the Middletown Inn.

In 1910, an interurban railroad was built through Middletown, connecting Louisville and Shelbyville. This caused a population boom in the area, as people were now able to commute to their jobs in each city along the railroad. However, following the widespread use of cars, the railroad was discontinued.

Today, Middletown has a historic district as well as several properties on the National Registry of Historic Places. There are also many retail shops and popular restaurants in the area. Visitors can stroll through Middletown’s well-preserved streets, experiencing the 200+ years of history for themselves.
