Crestwood, KY is a charming city in Oldham County, Kentucky that is located just outside the larger city of Louisville. It is a relatively small, residential community with a population of about 6, 264 people. It was even listed as the 52nd best place to live in America in 2005. Moon Trailer Leasing is proud to provide the best shipping container rentals Crestwood KY!

A Brief History of Crestwood

Something interesting to note about the history and evolution of the city of Crestwood is the fact that it not only wasn’t officially a city until 1970, but it also wasn’t given the name of Crestwood until 1909! Originally, Crestwood was known as Beard’s Station due to Joseph Beard, a man who initially purchased 263 acres of land in the area now known as Waldeck farm, making the decision to donate a portion of his land to the construction of the railroad that was to run from Louisville to Frankfort. While Crestwood has grown and developed since its beginnings in 1839, it continues to honor its rich cultural history through the maintenance of historic places such as Harrod’s Creek Baptist Church, Camp Kavanaugh, Waldeck Farm, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, and Duncan Memorial Chapel.

Because of the beautiful neighborhoods and amazing schools that Crestwood has to offer, it is the perfect place for families to live. In fact, Oldham County Schools have ranked in the 98th percentile on the state assessment, and each school in the district maintains the highest possible accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), designating OCS as an award-winning school district both on the state and national levels. Schools here are:

  • Camden Station Elementary School
  • Centerfield Elementary School
  • Crestwood Elementary School
  • Kenwood Station Elementary School
  • Locust Grove Elementary School
  • East Oldham Middle School
  • South Oldham Middle School
  • South Oldham High School

There are numerous parks that can keep the kiddos entertained for hours, such as The Maples Park, Briar Hill Park, and Peggy Barker Park. Similarly, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens also offers several special events throughout the year for children as well as adults! If you’re looking for a place to go that has a great atmosphere, amazing food, and top-notch beer, 3rd Turn Brewing at Oldham Gardens is just the place.

Moon Trailer Leasing and Moon Container Storage have what you need to build a shipping container house in Louisville, KY, but you'll need to get the permits yourself!

Permits and Approvals Needed to Build a Shipping Container Home in Louisville, Kentucky

If you’re considering buying a plot of property and building a shipping container home on it, or perhaps you already have a plot of land that you want to develop with a shipping container house, then there are a few things to know before you start building. Louisville, KY requires a few permits, approvals, and prerequisites just as they would if you decided to build a traditional house. Considering that constructing a shipping container house is not a DIY project, you’ll need a team of professionals to ensure your home is safe to live in and properly made, and those professionals will be able to help you get the approvals and code compliance that you need to successfully build your shipping container project.

Below, we’ve outlined the general information on the City of Louisville’s “Quick Guide to Permitting Your Shipping Container Project.”

Building Permit

Building permits are one of the most important permits to obtain. They can be issued to a contractor or a property owner and is official, governmental permission to:

  • Construct
  • Remodel
  • Remove
  • Repair
  • Or otherwise change the occupancy of a building

Louisville also requires a submittal and drawings to explain the project to be included with your completed building permit application form. Here is the official Residential Building Permit Checklist to check off before you submit your building permit application!

Zoning

Within the link included, you’ll find the Louisville Land Development Code, where you’ll find important zoning information regarding:

  • Unit number and building size for zoning districts (Chapter 3)
  • Fence height and location (Chapter 4)
  • Building height and location (Chapter 5)
  • Front, side, and rear yard setbacks (Chapter 5)

Based on city zoning laws, you may not be able to build a residential structure in an agricultural or commercial zone, and the zone that your property is in will dictate how large, small, or what kind of amenities your house can have.

Preservation Districts and Overlays

Further than zoning, your property might reside in a protected district with specific laws pertaining to design stipulations and restrictions, or in overlay districts, which are defined as, “geographic zoning districts layered on top of another existing zoning district, or districts, that implements additional regulations.” You’ll want to check to see if those restrictions or additional regulations apply to you!

Plumbing

For applications to plumbing permits through the State Department of Housing, Buildings, & Construction Division of Plumbing, check the link above.

Required Inspections

According to the City of Louisville, “all permits require inspections by our department to ensure that all applicable code requirements have been met and that the project has been constructed according to the approved plans. The number of inspections varies according to each project but generally occur at the foundation stage, the framing stage, and a final inspection of everything. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to notify the department when the work is ready for inspection.”

You can request an inspection on the City of Louisville’s website.

Code Compliance

You’ll need to have a plan for code compliance from your contractor and professionals in the construction submittal before building for:

  • Foundations
  • Openings for doors and windows
  • Roofs
  • Attached patios and decks
  • Interior finishes and equipment
  • Electrical and HVAC systems
  • Insulation and energy code requirements
  • Utility connections
  • Snow and roof loads
  • Interior live loads
  • Lateral stability
  • Energy code compliance
  • Interior systems

Utility Easements

An easement, which is defined by the Kentucky government as, “the right to use the real property of another for a specific purpose.” Your property may contain utility easements which may prohibit the property from construction for utility purposes, so you’ll want to confirm the existence of any easements before you plan your shipping container house.

Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) Requirements

Our local sewer district, MSD, has requirements regarding flood plain, sewer connections, storm drainage, & erosion control that may impact your ability or the risk of building a shipping container house on your property.

Once you’ve made sure you have these requirements checked off, Moon Container Storage will be waiting with shipping containers to sell you for your housing project!

Names that shipping containers are called

Other Names for a Shipping Container

If you’ve ever done any researching for new or used shipping containers, then perhaps you’ve caught sight of a few names that are different variations but all point to the same thing. We prefer the easy, self-explanatory version name – just the regular ol’ ‘shipping container’ – but do like to switch it up sometimes!

Some of the names might make you scratch your head and think, “Where did that come from?” but many have evolved just as any other slang does – in a specific location and with a specific definition in mind! 5 Amazing Storage Container Projects

5 Amazing Storage Container Projects

In the last few years, shipping/storage containers have been adapted for use in a number of building applications. Their durability, price, and availability make them a hot option for builders and buyers looking to take a step away from traditional materials and designs. Plus, because so many of these containers are built every year, building with them is an eco-friendly way to recycle the containers and keep them out of landfills. Below, we’ve put together a list of 5 amazing storage container projects to show you the potential of these containers.

Zieglerbuild house in Queensland, Australia

By now, many have heard of shipping container houses, but this home built by design and construction firm Zieglerbuild takes container builds to a new level. This 6000 square-foot home is made up of 31 individual containers. Wood floors, spacious interiors, and an in-ground saltwater pool aren’t features that come to mind when imagining living in a container home, but this astounding property offers them all and more. Visit Zieglerbuild’s gallery for some pictures of this beautiful home.

Modpools

Modpools is a company that turns shipping containers into custom built, modular swimming pools. Luxury may not be the first descriptor that comes to mind when imagining a shipping container pool, but with features like temperature control, smart lighting, and add-on hot tubs, these pools are top of the line.

Smoky Park Supper Club

The Smoky Park Supper Club holds the title for largest shipping container restaurant. Standing on the banks of the French Broad river in Asheville, North Carolina, the building is comprised of 19 storage containers. The supper club describes itself as “a gathering place for friends and family, locals and visitors, and everyone in between” and offers a diverse menu with some stellar locally-sourced options.

Vissershok primary school

The Vissershok Primary School is located in Durbanville, a valley on the outskirts of Capetown, South Africa. Positioned in a highly rural area, the school provides valuable education to an underprivileged community. Taking full advantage of its building budget, the school opted to construct a container classroom to maximize its learning space. With an attached playground, vegetable garden, and gathering area, this container classroom is a valuable asset to a school that is making a difference.

Cura Pods

Cura Pods are an open-source response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Cura-pods are basically shipping containers that are converted into temporary and mobile hospital rooms, designed for modular use. This design is especially effective for treating highly contagious diseases, since the pods double as sealed quarantine rooms. This design is very promising for use against future pandemics as well as anywhere a mobile and quick to deploy hospital is needed.

Used and new storage containers for sale or rent

Choosing a Storage Container: Which One Is For Me?

All storage situation have different storage needs – Moon knows that. In fact, that’s exactly why there’s an option for 20 foot standard, 40 foot standard, 20 foot Hi Cube, and 40 foot Hi Cube storage containers available.

All of our storage containers boast:

  • A highly-monitored structure to maintain integrity and safety
  • Double swing doors at both ends of the container
  • Short or long term rental
  • Location accessibility evaluation
  • Secure lock boxes
  • ISO-Standards for cleanliness, dryness, and security

But which one would be better for your storage needs?

Here’s a few things to consider when making your decision on storage container size.

Use

While it may be one of the more obvious considerations, it’s still a very important one. What will it be used for? Is it workshop storage? Commercial storage? Parts, pieces, delicates, size – it all contributes to the ultimate decision.

If it’s commercial use that the storage container will be used for, ask yourself if the contents will grow. Spare parts and pieces always seem to have a way of multiplying, and if your business if one that finds yourself with an excess of materials that need to be put somewhere, consider opting for a 40 foot container for future materials.

If your storage container will be put towards personal or residential use – for short term storage of items while you deep clean in preparation for a move, or for long term use of seasonal items, make sure you correctly measure how much material you have. Our dimensions allow for plenty of space for most items, but some pieces of furniture may require disassembly if they’re to be put with other big items or bulk boxes.

We also offer a refrigerated option for both 20 and 40 foot containers, with the only difference that the 20 foot is a standard container and the 40 foot is a Hi Cube container. Be sure to take into account that these units offer approximately 2 feet less than the space you would get with an regular container – 17′ 11″ for the 20 foot container and 37′ 11″ for the 40 foot containers – in order to take into consideration the space necessary for the refrigeration equipment.

Dimensions

To avoid any stress about sizes and space, our storage containers have a comprehensive list of dimensions, as listed below.

Dimensions of 20 or 40 foot storage containers

Standard or Hi Cube?

Besides just a 20 and 40 foot size option, Moon also offers the Hi Cube option for both lengths. These containers add an additional foot of height to your storage solution, making any tight spaces just a little easier to breathe in.

Standard containers come in approximate weights of 8,000 lbs. with a 2,694 cubic foot storage capacity for the 40 foot, and 5,000 lbs. with a 1,665 cubic foot capacity for the 20 foot storage container.

This may be changed by negligible amounts from standard to Hi Cube storage containers, but depending on your need, one foot may make all the difference, especially if your contents are fragile and you want some wiggle room.

Space Availability

Speaking of wiggle room, another factor you’ll have to consider is the space you have available for a storage container. These can be delivered and placed on ground level or on a chassis for dock-level access – again, it’s all very dependent on the application your storage container will be serving.

Moon offers a delivery location accessibility evaluation, so that you don’t have to worry, but if you’re in the initial stages of decision-making, our delivery methods for 20 foot storage containers are via a 35 foot flatbed roll-back truck, and our 40 foot storage containers are via a semi-truck with a 40 foot tilt-bed trailer.

Be sure to assure plenty of space for delivery, and call 502-776-2199 for a delivery location accessibility evaluation!

Trailer Leasing in Middletown, Kentucky

Did you know that Middletown is one of the earliest settlements in Kentucky? Founded in 1797, this home rule-class city features a winning combination of historical charm and commercial development.

Residents of Middletown can enjoy annual events, such as Concert in the Park, a Lenten fish fry, Veteran’s Day parade, and more. Those looking for event space can find ample enjoyment in Middletown’s Community Center, which occupies the site of the historic Middletown Methodist church. Its sanctuary features stained glass windows, pews, and a piano.

The History of Middletown, Kentucky

The name “Middletown” has a contentious backstory. Some historians believe that it was given this name due to its centrality between Louisville and Shelbyville, two larger cities. However, others think that “Middletown” can be credited to being between Westport and “Shippingport,” two early Ohio river port towns.

Originally a tract of land owned by Revolutionary War veteran Jacob Myers, Middletown’s central location made it quickly become an early trading post for farmers and travelers. It featured a tannery, cigar factory, millinery shop, general stores, a tailor, blacksmith, and more. Its location on a road between Lexington and Louisville made it a popular rest-stop for stage coaches and people on horseback. Early visitors could stay at pleasant amenities like the Middletown Inn.

In 1910, an interurban railroad was built through Middletown, connecting Louisville and Shelbyville. This caused a population boom in the area, as people were now able to commute to their jobs in each city along the railroad. However, following the widespread use of cars, the railroad was discontinued.

Today, Middletown has a historic district as well as several properties on the National Registry of Historic Places. There are also many retail shops and popular restaurants in the area. Visitors can stroll through Middletown’s well-preserved streets, experiencing the 200+ years of history for themselves.

Trailer Leasing in Clarksville, Indiana

Clarksville, Indiana is a historic and prosperous community located directly across the Ohio River from downtown Louisville. While it’s a part of the Louisville metropolitan area as well as the “SoIn” (Southern Indiana) region, Clarksville’s population is only 21,724, giving it a small town feel with plenty of amenities. Keep reading to learn about the history of Clarksville as well as popular restaurants, parks, shopping, and things to do in the area!

A Brief History of Clarksville

Clarksville has a long and fascinating history. It was founded in 1783 by George Rogers Clark, the younger brother of William Clark (of Lewis and Clark). Some historians believe that the Lewis and Clark expedition officially began in Clarksville. Clarksville also happens to be the oldest American town in the former Northwest Territory. During the Revolutionary War, Clark established a military base at the Falls of the Ohio (the largest exposed Devonian fossil bed in the U.S.), where he trained a 175 man-regimen.

Due to its lack of dueling regulation laws, Clarksville was also known for being a popular dueling spot for Kentuckians, such as the likes of Henry Clay and Humphrey Marshall. In 1809, Marshall called Clay a liar on the floor of the KY House of Representatives. Clay, as customary, challenged him to a duel at Silver Creek in Clarksville. Luckily, both men survived the duel; Clay went on to become one of the most famous Kentuckians in history, and Marshall wrote the first complete history of Kentucky!

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Clarksville was plagued by floods, hindering its growth and economic viability. In fact, during the Great Flood of 1837, Clarksville was almost entirely decimated by up to 12 feet of flooding. However, this crisis gave rise to new opportunities–during the post-World War 2 boom, Clarksville established suburbs, shopping plazas, malls, factories, expanding exponentially in size. Today, Clarksville has award-winning schools and neighborhoods, great parks, popular restaurants, and plenty to do for anyone interested.

Things To Do In Clarksville

Some popular activity centers in Clarksville include the Sportsdrome Speedway, Xtremenasium Trampoline and Ninja Park, Atlantis Waterpark, the Green Tree Mall, and the famous Colgate Clock.

Global Shipping Container Shortage: Everything You Need to Know

Did you know that there’s an international shortage of shipping containers? While this may not seem like such a big deal, it has actually affected every aspect of our lives!

Shipping containers are at the heart of the global economy, transporting billions of dollars’ worth of consumer goods, apparel, materials, manufacturing parts, and countless other products between countries and continents every day. Normally, when even one aspect of the supply chain is waylaid, the consequences are substantial. So, when there is a global pandemic, the results are disastrous!

How The Container Shortage Happened

In the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns and government-imposed limits halted the production of many goods, reducing the intricate flow of exports and imports between nations. Consumer demand also plummeted, as people stopped going out to shop and stimulate the economy. This all caused less shipping containers and cargo ships to be necessary. So, the unneeded containers were sent to inland depots and ports, stacked up by the thousands.

Months later, as restrictions began to lift, the need for shipping containers began to increase in some places more than others. Countries with less restrictions needed more shipping containers, while countries with tight lockdowns needed few. This disparity caused an imbalance of the distribution of shipping containers—that is to say, they’re all in the wrong spots.

Some ports are overwhelmed and crowded with containers, struggling to load and unload fast enough. In Los Angeles, there was a reported “parking lot” of cargo ships waiting to unload for weeks. In China, a shut-down port caused the delay of over 350,000 containers for two months. Depending on the product, shipping delays can be anywhere from days to months. It’s a domino effect: delays stack on delays, as backlog increases, demand increases, and prices spike. With all this compounding disarray, there’s no end in sight; the global shipping container shortage is likely to last into 2022.

How Does This Affect Us?

As consumers, we aren’t directly involved in the day-to-day affairs of international shipping. However, we will certainly bear some of the economic strain of the crisis. Consumer goods, from cereal to t-shirts, are facing inflated prices. Companies cannot afford to pay for the growing expenses of shipping containers, and are forced to place some of the cost on us. While price increases for many products are negligible, they add up.

In turn, there’s growing speculation around the impact on the upcoming holiday season. As CEO of the large marine consulting firm Sea Intelligence ApS Alan Murphy stated, “It’s a crisis of excessively high demand and a severe shortage of supply of vessel space and empty containers… don’t be surprised if your Christmas shopping list comes out short.” Maybe it’s time to begin your holiday shopping, right now!
