Shively, KY has a long history with the Louisville area as a home rule-class city in Jefferson County under the metro government, and Moon Trailer Leasing is proud to serve the area for their trailer leasing and sales needs! A Brief History of Shively

Shively has been around practically since Louisville was founded in 1778, starting out as a small farming community whose landowners included the Shively family that the city is named after. The area once included a mill and tavern that were known as the “Shively Precinct” until 1816, when the land was donated to a church – the modern day Parkview Methodist.

In 1831, a stagecoach stop was added to the area, followed by the Elizabethtown and Paducah Railroad in the 1870s. After the Civil War, the Shively area became a refuge for German immigrants, who erected St. Helen’s Catholic Church in 1897, which was what the area was briefly known as until the Post Office couldn’t adopt the name due tot he existence of another St. Helen’s in Lee County, KY. This church and school was torn down in 2014.

The era of Prohibition and the Great Depression saw relative historic success for Shively, as the Brown-Forman distillery – who manufactures several popular brands of alcohol like Old Forester, Jack Daniels, Woodford Reserve, Finlandia, and now-sold off Early Times – managed to obtain one of the few permits to make medicinal alcohol during Prohibition, boosting the economy of the city while others’ fell. At the end of Prohibition, 8 distilleries opened in Shively, and Louisville attempted and failed to annex and tax those distilleries until they convinced the residents to incorporate separately in May of 1938. The distilleries left Shively with a $20 million revenue stream that kept it funded into the 50s and 60s, when it became the fastest-growing city in Kentucky.

The following era saw the gradual decline in the environment, brought on by the distilleries closing, the population falling, and racism taking ahold of the city as white flight segregated the area and saw the Wade Incident of 1954. Since then, the black population has increased to make up approximately 30% of the total population, but the city was again hit with scandal in the 80s, when the police chief admitted to taking bribes that would allow prostitution in the area, which earned it the nickname “Lively Shively.”

Today, Shively is a stop in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail with the Brown-Forman Distillery, a Bulleit Bourbon tourist attraction, and the Michter’s Distillery and is slowly improving with the help of various public works projects and businesses moving into the area. The city of Shively includes a total of 4.6 square miles, 0.01 square miles of it water. According to the 2020 census, the population has grown by 2.4% from 2010 to 15,636 people.

Jeffersonville, IN may not be the largest city in the state, but it sure is one with several claims to fame. From the county seat of Clark County to the proud city that Papa John’s Pizza originated from to the site of the annual Abbey Road on the River Beatles music festival, Jeffersonville – or Jeff, as it’s oftentimes referred to – has a rich history that extends throughout the ages and a promising future ahead.

The History of Jeffersonville, IN

Jeffersonville originally wasn’t a city at all – it was founded as a settlement in 1786 strategically placed around Fort Finney with access to the Ohio River’s protection and water, but it didn’t obtain its current title until 1801, when it was named after Thomas Jefferson the year he took office.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Jeffersonville played crucial roles in several landmark events, including:

  • Functioning as a shipyard during the early-mid 1800s and during WWII
  • Being one of the largest routes for fugitives in the Underground Railroad
  • Being home to the Jefferson General Hospital – the 3rd largest in the nation during the Civil War
  • Being a main military supply depot during the Civil War and WWI

  • De-segregating their schools 2 years before Brown v. Board of Education passed and being considered a model city for it

Jeffersonville has also had difficulties at points, though, just as every other city. Hit by the devastating Flood of 1937, 90% of the city was flooded and there was no electricity and no escape, as all roads leading into the city were covered due to a levee failure. There was also a time period in the 1930s where Jeffersonville was nicknamed “Little Las Vegas” due to a booming gambling scene to recover from the Great Depression. This business was so big that it brought in famous mobsters such as Clark Gable, Al Capone, and John Dillinger; however, the gambling scene was run out by the early 40s due to public outcry and rising violence.

Jeffersonville in Modern Times

In 2008, Jeffersonville made its largest annexation in the city’s history, a planned 6 annex zones that would add 7,800 acres. Only 5 of these zones were annexed in the end, but they expanded Jeffersonville’s land and population by approximately 5,500 acres and 9,500 people, which has grown to be what Jeffersonville is today. As of the 2020 census, the population rests around 50,000 people and the city limits encompass a total of 34.35 square miles of area.

With its proximity to Louisville by bridge over the Ohio River, the conversion of the Big Four Bridge – once a railway bridge – into a pedestrian and bicycle bridge caused a larger amount of foot traffic to come into Jeffersonville, so they constructed the Big Four Station, which is a plaza and part that features green space, fountains, a playground, and access to downtown. This is also where the Abbey Road on the River music festival is held – the largest Beatles-inspired festival in the world!

While the original “Papa John”, John Schnatter, might not own the franchise anymore, the 4th largest pizza delivery chain was still founded in a small closet-turned-oven-kitchen at the back of a tavern in 1984. Just 9 years after John Schnatter made his first pizza in that closet, the company went public and now has over 5,500 locations across the globe. The tavern, which belonged to Schnatter’s father, is called Mick’s Lounge and is still functioning today!

Jeffersonville’s long history in the shipyard business came to a relative halt in 2018, when the largest inland shipbuilder in the US, Jeffboat (which was previously known as Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Company and Howard Shipyard during WWII) closed due to overproduction after 200 years. However, this 80-acre property is now under the jurisdiction of the city and, in 2022, it was announced by city officials that there were plans in the works to redevelop it.

If you know about our mobile office for rent services, then you might be aware that we offer two different types office: ground level offices and mobile offices. Both of these container-based offices are wonderful additions to worksites, but you might be wondering – what’s the difference?

While the two are comparable in many ways, there are a few factors that distinguish one from the other.

1. Set-Up and Placement

The most obvious difference is that mobile offices are mounted on a chassis and wheels and then pulled by a trailer to the job site, where is sits in a locked position on a cinderblock mount. They include OSHA-compliant stairs, as well, as opposed to the ground level offices, which have no need.

Ground level offices are completes flat, made out of repurposed shipping containers, and are placed on the jobsite via a crane after being transported.

2. Size Availability

Due to the mobile trailer option not being made from a shipping container, there are differing sizes in what stock we have to offer.

Mobile Offices – 20 ft. and 30 ft.

Ground Level Offices – 20 ft. and 40 ft.

Our ground level offices are offered in the same dimensions as our shipping containers for rent or for sale, save for the Hi-Cube option, which is unique to the non-office containers.

3. Storage Options

Due to the heightened security that a shipping container affords, we offer a variety of different ground level configurations to fit your needs. One of those options is a container office that is made up of  50% storage and 50% office, with an interior wall to separate the spaces.

With the space constraints of the mobile offices, we unfortunately cannot provide that extra storage space at this moment in time, but there is still plenty of space in the office area to enjoy!

4. Long-Term Cost

Due to the upkeep of the chassis and wheels, usually the mobile offices have a few costs down the road that ground level offices can avoid, depending on how often the office moves sites. Since ground level offices are generally a little more expensive to move with the equipment required, they’re better as a long-term, yet still temporary office solution for one site, whereas the mobile office is convenient for companies that need a more portable option.

What Doesn’t Change?

While there are a few things that change between the two office options, there are plenty of things that are the same across the board! And we want to say, we think that they’re the most important details in the end, because Moon want you to have the best portable office around!

1. Terrain

Both offices are compatible with multiple kinds of terrain – the only requirement that they need are a flat surface to rest on for stability. If the site is very rural or natural, then it might be best to keep in mind the transportation methods of each office! The mobile office needs a truck to pull it as well as a jack to lift it for chassis care , but the ground level office are delivered on a tilt bed trailer or roll-back truck, so there could be additional equipment needed – such as forklifts, jacks, or cranes – to place it in the right location.
